New member etz questions

Postby Lpo90 » Tue Oct 22, 2013 2:18 pm

Hi, I'm close to getting. My hands on an 1988 etz250, just wondered if anybody could give me a few tips on what to look out for and common problems with this model. Really like the look and idea of owning an mz. Thanks in advance Dan.

Depends on how it has been cared for really.

Definitely worth checking for and treating any corrosion at the bottom of the main frame member just around where the main stand pivots. Also worth checking the oil pump and it's cable for correct operation, and the crankcase seals (Gearbox oil will smell of petrol, and / or you will get lots and lots of white smoke in the exhaust).

If the original mechanical voltage regulator and metal plug cap are still there, I would replace them ASAP.

Otherwise, it's just the normal checks you would do any any used bike ie. brakes, bearings, plug, points and timing, forks and seals, electrical connections and loose fasteners etc etc.

Simples

Thanks it's looks like it's been well cared for and has some service history with it. Have only got an old c90 in the garage now so I need another bike to mess about on.

Honestly, pmorris mentioned all the common problems on these. If you check the bike for regular maintenance and see a lapse in anything, I would definitely just have it done. Obviously changiung all the fluids and plugs immediately is the easiest solution.

Also look for rust... that can create a bigger problem down the road if not treated correctly.

Check all of the gears engage properly and don't jump out on the over run.

The clutch should be smooth and not drag in first gear once the gear oil has warmed up.

The rear shock adjusters should be present on both shocks (not snapped off) and movable by hand.

Check for rust inside the tank, this *will* cause a breakdown.

If it's still got an original Pneumant tyre on it at either end, bin it immediately.

Thanks, yep rust is a big killer on the honda 90s too,the bike comes with a manual so that will have all the service info in that, thbikes iv had in the past iv done most of the servicing for not that I'm that technically minded of course haha. Will be a bit more tricky then my basic honda c90 I imagine but will have a try.

Thanks arry_b just saw your post. I like the look of the etz and prefer older bikes for some reason. Would like an all round bike I could use daily and hope this could be upto the job.

If you get it, definately change the fuse box for a more modern bayonette/blade type fuse box found at any automotive store for very little.
I, and others have had issues with oxydising contacts and badly sprung fuse mounts with the older 'continental' Bosch type or glass type fuses. I've broken down a few times due to the fuses being an issue, and having to twist them or clean them before seting off again. Bayonette type are closed to the elements, and not to mention much easier to replace being more common.

Hi, picking up an etz 250 on Tuesday, got 40k on the clock and is a 88 plate.
Anybody know roughly what the fuel consumption will be like along with realistic cruising speed. It comes with a Manual so hopefully that will have all the basics such as tyre pressure, oil etc etc.
Thanks.

Over 50 mpg should be easily obtained, or there's something wrong with it.

Ridden gently, one of my 301s gets 70. Another I had did 42 in similar circumstances, so they can be a bit variable.

Easy cruising speed on a 250 should be around 65, after that they can get a bit thirsty. Top speed will be in the late seventies early eighties, but it's hard work.

arry's right, even a poor tired engine can get at least 50mpg, and newish rebuilds/low mileages can get as good as 65+mpg depending on conditions.

I remember a couple of times getting as low as 33mpg, which I can only put down to a sticking carburettor slide. Cleaned it up a couple of times which seemed to resolve it and never had an issue since. Been low to mid 50's since, being as my engine is particularly tired. Really odd one that.
