Newbie - just got a 1000SF

Postby tuxracer » Sun Apr 20, 2008 7:13 pm

Hi all,

Just got myself an 05 1000SF and although its early days I'm highly impressed with it. I've been looking for something a bit diferent and tried lots of bikes out over the last few weeks including the Superduke, Speed triple, Tuono etc but none of them realy hit the mark. I'd never thought about the MZ and only found this one by chance but after a quick test ride I bought it there and then. My first ride was 150 miles home in the cold and dark but I loved every minute of it. The only bad thing I can find is that the mirrors are useless when making progress much above 80.

Here is a picture of my new baby enjoying some Highland sunshine yesterday.

While I'm on does anyone know where I can download the service manual (tried the previous post and the link seems to be broken) and does anybody supply a grab rail for this bike?

Looks like it's going to be a fun summer.

Cheers

HI Ian,

Welcome to the site. I have that service manual, but file hosting for free on the internet sucks. I have to try again, but if you have AIM I can send it that way

Congrats on your purchase!

Here's my baby

Hi m4panther, I dont have AIM but if the files not to big you could e-mail it to tuxracer@hotmail.com and I'll pick it up from there.

Like your bike as, well the 1000s looks realy good. Cant help thinking that these bikes would have sold in big numbers with a different badge on the tank and decent support. Although the nearest dealer is 200 miles from me, they are at least friendly and clued up when dealing with them and spares dont seem to be to much of an issue here.

Still on the upside I'm never likely to lose the SF in a car park or find another half dozen all the same parked beside it!

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian :smt006

Welcome to the small but slowly growing group of MZ 1000 owners, definately one of the most overlooked/under-rated/unknown bikes around....and I agree, if the badge said something other than MZ, they'd be selling a whole lot better. They are great bikes with lots of character.

I only asked if it was the one in fife as it had been advertised in the mz owners club magazine. It looked as if it was well looked.
Hope you have as much fun with it as i have had with my bike.

LWS66 - nice in black as well, what type of cans have you got on her?

tomtom - yeah I found it on there as well as e-bay. The guy that was selling it had it from new and it had a full service history with Borders Bikes. Had only done 4000 miles and other than one or two corroded fasteners was like new. He had another single cylinder MZ that he used all the time and hardly used the SF, seemed to prefer the singles. I've done 500 miles since Friday when I picked it up and have deliberately given it a fairly hard time to see if it holds together, so far it seems to be lapping it up and going better and better. Roll on summer.........come to think of it the suns shining this morning, so time to hit the road.

mzsrus - thanks for letting me know about the grab rail, I'll drop you a line to discuss. Don’t really want to fit one but my young son likes to go out on the bike and there's not a lot to hang on to.

Lads
Please find enclosed photos of my 1000st, now up to 15,000m with electrical faults only. I have also included a small item that I wrote for the uk MZ owners club mag detailing some of the idiosyncracies of the machine.

Newbie
Sorry about the size of the photo, forgot to reduce it. Some items to add: check all engine casing bolts (some work loose) and if possible fit stainless. The heat guard on the R/H exhaust pipe also falls off if the bolts are not checked. The sump plug is an internally wrenching hexagon (allen socket) and will not stand a lot of mistreatment, I am in the process of making an externally wrenching replacement. The Start button on the handlebar cluster can prove problematic, I have replaced it with a fairing mounted (sealed) marine push button. The start repeat prevention device (not in wiring diagram) can also prove troublesome, I have removed it as I do not need an electronic device to tell me not to push the start button with the engine running! A spare pencil coil is also quite useful as it is not safe to ride this machine very far on one cylinder (see letter)the original Sagem item has questionable reliability on a motorcyle. You can prolong its life by removing it, coating in light silicone grease and giving the head/plug socket area with a water dispersant (WD40 etc). DO NOT SPRAY WATER DIRECTLY ON THIS AREA WHEN WASHING THE BIKE. I am sourcing an O ring of the correct size to fit at the upper end of the coil/plug cap to prevent water ingress. Will post more when I remember.
Good Luck

Boilermaker Great post!!!
I enjoyed you letter to the editor as well. what you said is true. This side of the pond there is almost no support. thIS FORUM is my support!!
Thank you for the heads up on the loose hardware. I would like to ask if you could include the way you disabled the start repeat prevention device. I believe that is the root of all evil in my bike.

Do you ride in the rain often?

I am afraid that I have forgotten exactly how I removed the start repeat switch from circuit, however I seem to remember removing the feed to, and the feed from the handlebar switch, transferring the live feed to the new switch then fitting a new wire from the new switch directly to the main starter relay thus by passing the repeat lock out device. I think your fellow countryman LWS66 could probably be of assistance here as he is more familiar with automotive wiring systems than I am.
Yes we do ride in the rain a lot over here as I suspect that the climate is not a lot different to yours over there in NJ exept perhaps that you get colder winters. While I am writing I can recommend Grahams motorcycles over here for spares, he is still building up stocks but has already proven very helpful.

I fogot to mention that a fender (websters) or mudguard (oxford) extension will considerably reduce the amount of water arriving at the top of the engine when you are under way. It also protects the radiator/oil cooler from stone damage.
