Lucky lucky lad!!

Postby JawasandMZs » Sun Aug 14, 2022 6:02 pm

I'm a lucky lucky lad. I was out earlier on my Jawa and the throttle cable broke, at the nipple end in the throttle tube. I struggled home by turning in the tickover screw on the carb.
Once safely home I realised that the throttle cable in fact operates the oil pump too. So if you're relying on adjusting the tick over screw to go faster you're not getting any oil to the engine, resulting in seizure.
Thank I thought to myself oh my God thank GOD I run this bike on premix!!!

What a life saver!

Edit: in conclusion I'd strongly recommend replacing the throttle cable every 3 years as a precaution. It's what I'll be doing from now on.

EDIT 2. just installed the new cable, fiddly one hour job, one of them annoying jobs where things go ping if let go. Blurred man honestly thinks it's a feasible job at roadside. Blimey, for you maybe!
I'd be better off with cable ties and mole grips!

the auto lube is nice but on my Yamaha ym1 305 1966 i added enough premix to make it smoke a bit
traded it on my first bmw wish i had kept it for the collection mine was red
it ran real good on the same spark plugs as my r50s bmw

I have always been of the belief that one should carry spare cables- the important ones, Clutch, throttle. :-D

Back in 1973, I rode my BSA B40 over some 50 miles of dirt road pulling on the knotted end of the cable and steering with one hand.

Following a biased and flawed moderator choice (someone posting aggressive personal attacks is rewarded, while my technical posts are removed - behind my back & without any justification!), I have withdrawn from this forum.

My Ar 125 was always shredding the lever end of the throttle cable, so I listened to my mate. He always carried a cable tie and a small speaker cable splicer. You stick the cable splicer on the dead end of throttle wire and clip it/ hit it with a brick ( plenty of them lying at the side of the road), then cable tie it to the throttle lever. Seldom fails, even if your throttle is `fly by wire ` :smt005
