Skorpion -sat too long, won't start

Postby Nozz » Wed Jan 28, 2015 1:43 pm

Hello all,

I have a 2002 Skorpion that has been a bit neglected. I let it go a few months without running/riding, now it has no sign of life, not starter turning, no click, nothing. Battery is fine, so should I start by checking for corrosion on the kill switch? Any help is appreciated. Trying to avoid a trailer ride to the shop. Thank you.

start by removing and testing all your fuses
use a 12 volt bulb and power the bulb through the fuse
plug and unplug the fuses several times

read about relay 19 and relay 30

make sure kill switch is in run position

red white and red/black wires at relay 19/30 should both have power
with side stand up and bike in neutral
plus key in on position

check back side of key switch and where its pluged in to the harness

I'd definitely clean the battery terminals and cable ends that connect to them. Make sure where the ground cable attaches to the frame/engine is clean and tight as well. You say the battery is "fine", but have you load tested it or just checked the voltage?

Hi Jim,

Have you tested the battery amps as well as the voltage,

also if you've had it removed have you reattached the additional earth wire form the loom to the battery as well as the main earth?

You could also jump the two large post terminals on the starter relay to bypass the starter button circuit to see if the motor spins over.

And finally when there is life in the old dog I would drain the fuel from the carb float bowl and refill it with fresh.

Good luck with the German wiring!

P.S. I'm not implying your bike is an "old dog." :smt007

P.P.S. Good point about the kill switch Dave, we've all done it.

I am still wrangling with this thing. The battery was dead, so I charged it, no good, but it turned a bit, then I think I may have the wires crossed on this relay, when I turn the key on, it tried to turn, with out the start button being pushed. Now I have a new battery, but it blows the 10A fuse any way I try it. Can one of you send me a picture of the correct wiring for this relay? Thanks!

That is the side stand cutout relay. Mine failed on both my bikes and I removed them. Connect the 2 smaller tabs together using a suitable blade type fuse will let you start the bike. Leave the 2 larger ones free. Handle bar kill switch will be disabled is the only problem until you can get a replacement.

OK, I finally got back to looking at this again with the schematic. The problem child relay is NOT the same as the cutoff relay illustrated. That one is on the right side of the frame and is all connected as shown. This is right in the middle by the fuse box and has a RB wire on spade 3. The other wires are brown, purple and pink (red?). Is there another illustration of that one? I did find a replacement relay, but I think I just need the correct terminals/colors. Thanks!

r/b is plus voltage pin 3 pin 5 is output with relay powered
pin 4 is powered with relay off
pin 1 is plus same as 3 and 2 is grounded to turn relay on

think this may shut off head lamp when starter is cranking

i am looking for drawings and bike is parked in part of basement with no lights
so will look at the mess under the seat tuesday some time

and edit this note
not worked on the bikes in a bit and need to sort out whats going on in the circut

Good news at last. I googled the schematic, found the darn thing in German, translated the colors, Red Black is Rot Schwartz or Ro Sch for short. The relay I was dinking around with was fine, just cross wired. The cutoff relay you all were talking about was indeed the problem, at least the rusted spade. I replaced it with the one I bought and it fired right up. Now onto getting it kind of back in shape. Thanks for your help! Next subject. What to do about a worn out fit of the muffler can to the pipe. Rattles. Need to shrink one or squeeze down the other, or shim it. Suggestions?

good local muffler shop usually has tools to make the end pipe bigger or smaller by a bit

do it to the muffler
