Oil switch questions.

Having just got my 500R Running, I would like the oil switches to work, which they don't currently.

There's one under the frame which I understand is the oil level switch, when connected it's just on permanently and the Neutral light stays illuminated.

Also on the clocks is the Oil pressure light, but it would appear someone has in the past changed my engine from something which didn't have an E-start and subsequently I've had to convert mine. I didn't see an oil pressure switch when I had the engine apart and can't see anything elsewhere on the frame.

Where should the pressure switch be? Could I Add one?

Dave.

There's only one oil pressure switch, it's on the oil filter cover. The one on the lower part of the engine is the neutral switch.

right beside the carb to engine boot on bottom of frame is a wire going to a plug
in the frame oil tank
this i think is low oil warning
its hidden by a hose on mine
its right beside the carb to engine boot on left and looking in from the right its behind a hose
that comes from the front of tank and turns down and goes to the engine

there were some spares of this part for sale on ebay about a year ago

Thanks guys, its quite obvious that mine has no switch, there was nothing on the oil filter cover, just 3 retaining bolts and what looks like a drain bolt. I presume this is where the switch would be? Does anyone have a picture of it?

The one under the tank doesn't seem to work. It's just ON permanently and makes you think you're constantly in neutral. I've got the neutral light/switch working just fine. The gearboxes on these rotax'es are lovely!

Dave.

p.s. just how much oil should I have put in? I read 2 litres somewhere, so that's what I put in.

Hi David,

Nope, mine doesn't have a dipstick at all, the plastic filler cap is just that, a cap and nothing else. There's not even a hole in it where there could have been a stick.

The pipe that goes from the filler cap is maybe 2" in length before it disappears into the tank/frame, nowhere near long enough for that dipstic in your picture.

Quite confusing. 2 Litres, does this sound right?

Dave.

Good luck recommissioning her then, that's a long time for such a nice machine to be off the road.

The Saxon Tour, Saxon Country and Silver Star all take 3 liters according to the factory manual. Is the 500R any different?

I don't believe so, they all share the same frame and engine so should be the same oil.

I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can get the light to go out.
