First Impressions

Postby retwool » Tue Oct 18, 2005 1:27 pm

Just bought a 03 Bagaira and got out on it for a while today. I'm coming off an R6 from years ago and its definately a change. I actually felt more comfortable on the R6 but, I'm sure it just takes some getting used to. Hit the rev limiter right off the bat in 1st gear. Love the sound it makes but, I'm used to taking the R6 up to 13000 RPMS, does feel a bit slow right now. Can't wait to try it in the twisties although again when I got on the entrance ramp it felt a bit weird going into the corner. Need to get my confidence up that it will hold.

Anyway, I'm in the San Francisco....anyone else in the area? Also, anyone have experience with any kind of a surfboard holder? I have 6'4 and a 6'7 and I need to rig something up.

Thanks

Compared to an R6 on more open roads it is slow! Get it on some tight bumpy backroads and it will spank the R6!! I also came to the Baggy via a sportsbike (CBR600 was the last) and it does take a little getting used to. The engine obviously doesnt rev as high but I personally find riding the tourqe in the mid range / upper mid range really satisfying especially when the roads tighten up.....at least it makes me feel like I'm going pretty quick  With regard to cornering, when I first started riding the Baggy I was sitting too far towards the rear of the saddle ....get your spuds right up against the tank and the front end feels a lot more planted with good feedback. The brakes are the only thing I think generally need upgrading ..... jumping on my wifes ZXR400 last weekend only served to convince me that I really must get around to sorting out a better set up.

The Baggy is a great bike and in terms of fun per quid (dollar) it is great value.

Surfboards ....sorry mate, no idea !

Your experiance of a Baggy is possibly the same as everyoneś first ride after coming from a 4 cylinder!

My last bike was a GPZ 1100 - so yes, the baggy was slow - but, there are two things you need to do!

1 Change the exhaust - big difference!

2 Dont ride by the rev counter (not that there is one - put I hope you understand what I mean!!) Remember that power wise, it has more tourque at 5K revs than an R1!

The cool thing with a Baggy is that it opens up a different world of biking to u!

You don need to slow down, you don´t use the brakes, you sit on the tank and you have more manuvrability than you could ever have on a sports bike!!

Have fun - it normally takes a few rides to learn the way of the Baggy!!

I will only run out of ways of modify the Baggy when it weighs less that 100 kg and runs 100 bhp at the back wheel!!

Shit, i came from a Z1000 chop with a very low seat height to a baggy 4 yrs after getting the chop written off and wow was the baggy high and uncomfortable, but once you get used to the ever so slightly different riding position and the mad low down grunt , it will all become clear and you will be a slave to the big single  .

Cheers

Bought my Baggy as a second bike to keep my immaculate fortune-spent tuned and groomed GSXR1100/Zephyr/VFR/Triumph/Fireblade/Ohlins etc streetfighter mint when the weather was less kind.

Had a 200 mile ride home from where I bought it. Pulled away & hit the rev limiter instantly. Thought this is slow. Felt very miserable... However by the time I got home I had learned to ride the low down/mid-range torque & sit at the front and had the biggest grin on my face I'd had for many, many years.

I had it about 8 weeks now & done over 2000 miles just using it for fun! I go out for long (200 mile) rides at the weekends with my mates who all have litre plus sportsbikes. We typically ride fast A roads at a 'sensible but brisk' pace(!). On the twisties I watch them work hard through the bends as I simply flick the Baggy about & have a laugh. Even when the road straightens up I only get left behind on the odd occasion they really gun it and as soon as they hit the bends I'm up with them.

I've had a few things done to it. It came with "a racing piston" (?!) according to the last owner & has an aftermarket exhaust. I had it tuned by a specialist (JHS Racing, Bristol) who did nothing much more than 'fiddle' in a knowledgeable way (£200) which resulted in near as damn it 50 Bhp *at the wheel* and, of course, shed loads of torque! I've also had the front forks rebuilt by another specialist (£160 - MH Racing in Corsham) which transformed the already fantastic (once you learn the weight over front style) handling. Put a slightly wider 160 tyre in & the final touch was to loose a couple of teeth on the back sprocket - which I wasn't sure about doing but as soon as I rode it knew I'd done the right thing (I rarely hit the rev limiter once I'd learned to use the gearbox porperly but *never* do now and it feels just right).

I bought it as a second inexpensive bike, but I have to be honest - if I had to choose between the two...!

In short, if you're new to this sort of thing, stick with it. Believe me - it's got to be about the most fun you can have on two wheels!

Hi Ma5k, where you based in the UK? I live in teh Basinstoke area. If you live local to me you could join me and a few of my friends with Motards on ride outs. If you dont live near enough, then I am sure others on this forum go on similar ride outs.

Thanks for the offer Keith!
I'm actually based in the South West so it'd be quite a trek (having said that the bikes soooo much fun what's an extra few hundred miles on a ride!!).
Seriously though, I'll be sure to PM/look you up if I'm over your way. Happy Baggin'!

I live in the Civic area. I was actually driving down Polk on Sunday and saw a MZ parked on the street. That didn't happen to be you? Do you ever do any riding up to that Cafe on Skyline?

I accually havn't done any riding in SF. I just spent the last 3 months in South America so I left my bike in Idaho since I don't have a garage right now. I'll be getting it this Christmas, or I'll leave it there it just depends on how I end up liking MZ. I've always wanted one, now my wie wants one too. Chicks are too expensive. I'll just let her ride my duc :-) I'm just off the Embarcadero about a mile fron SBC park. I havn't been around the city much just to the usual tourist spots.

When you get your bike we should go for a ride. Unless you have the Duc here now?
