Baghira - oil consumption

Postby Garf » Wed Nov 23, 2005 9:12 am

Can anybody give me a feel for how much oil I should expect the Baggy to use in say 1000Km ?

Just checked mine and it was very low. Last time I topped it up I didnt take much notice of the mileage but it doesnt 'feel' like I have done a massive amount since. I am now going to monitor it more closely but need some sort of benchmark to measure my bikes consumption against. If it is on the high side I only have a couple of months to get it back in to the dealer under warranty !!

No obvious leaks and it isnt blowing blue smoke.

Cheers fellas (and ladies if there are any !)

Oil level check - always a problem !

We have innumerable posts to this topic in our German Baghira forum !

Finally we found a practicable solution which leads to the best results:

1) Start the cold engine and drive five minutes round the block.

2) Stop, idle engine 30 seconds holding the bike vertical

3) Stop engine, hold your bike vertical (important !!) and check oil level.

That's quite similar to the recommendation of MZ.

Most owners however wrote, that they had the same result measuring the oil level if engine is cold (before starting the engine) and time between check and last ride is not too long.

To be sure you should take the official method. But try also checking oil if engine is cold without runnig the motor and compare both.

My Baghira has now approx. 38,000 km and sucks only oil if running longer distances with higher speed.

Normally it's O.K. to check oil every 1,000 km.
Between the normal oil-change intervalls I don't have to fill up oil.

Jo,

Out of curiosity, are you supposed to screw the dipstick all the way in to check or just place it on top of the threads (not screwing it in)? The manual doesn't say so I thread it in, but always wondered if this was the right thing.

Thanks.

I run mine until the oil tank in the frame is warm, but not hot to the touch. let it idle for 30 seconds is very important as the engine sump needs this step to scavenge oil properly. shut off and check oil with bike vertical ( I put a 2X4 under the kickstand). mine does not use any oil between changes of 2500 miles.I check the level every 500 miles or so.

oil

Postby DAVID THOMPSON » Fri Nov 25, 2005 5:00 pm

my saxon tour uses very little between changes now that its broke in

but a r90s bmw i had was a qt. every 1000 miles from the day
it was new till i sold it at 479,000 miles 28 years later
it smoked out the pipe so bad i got asked if it was a 2 cycle
one time :-D

if your using oil run it a bit harder and get the rings seated

I will update my post. my bike seemed to use oil for the first 2-3 oil changes, but now uses less than .5 qt between changes (2500miles)
