2003 butchered wiring

Postby funmonkee » Sun Jan 23, 2022 2:56 pm

I've had this yellow 2003 for a couple of years.,,actually 3 years, pre COVID...

Just getting around to cleaning it up.

Done the wheels. new discs, chain and sprockets, got some replacement panels. Decided to start it up and had to remove the battery to charge that...
wow what a mess!

It was never great, but once the battery came out it just looks the pits.. . .:-(

I'm using as much internet resources as I can to try to tidy this up. for example the diagrams on https://grahamsmotorcycles.com/mz-parts ... l-devices/ have helped with part numbers. But pretty much knackered with the electrics. it's been hacked about so much.

So,
what would help me, is for any close up photos of under the seat electrics. showing me the difference to this mess ...

Thank you for the reply.
It's been a years since I've been active here :-)
Should be a basic common sense that things should be extended and not mutated and hacked to death :-)

I've spent a fair bit to get this bike clean and almost ready for the road. If I'd looked at the battery and electrics first, I would have given up at the start.
Just not sure where to start. The headlight works; clock lights, for headlight on and full bean work. The indicators are dead. The rear tail light is on; but no activity when I use the rear or front brake.
With a fairly new battery attached; it tries to turn over. There is fuel will need to get the plug out and see what state it's in.

I'll look for the post by tony idle

Cheers

be careful with the carb // on many there is a filter just before the float needle

do not break the post on the carb getting the float pin out to clean the fuel line
inlet the float is in the way of getting the needle and seat with filter out

the green wire gives it away its relay right in the lower middle
of the wires drawing and carries every thing it is relay 19
when it closes at power on the red black and red white get connected
and the bike is on

the green wire goes to transmission switch

if a bike is past its second owner its probably got a
mangled wiring harness

i bought several bmw bikes 55 to 1980 because of butchered wires
the only reason was the guy working on it did not know squat about wiring

or to read the book on how to get the magneto timed proper

No worries.
Clean, really? I`m not one for cleaning and the wiring hasn`t been touched from new because it hasn`t needed it to be honest (new in 2004)
Perhaps you ought to step away from it for a bit before coming to a firm decision, i think you`ll get hardly anything for it as it stands.
Happy to supply further (and better quality!) photos if and when needed.
Cheers.
