US Riders: Who are you buying liability insurance from?

Postby Sir Real Ed » Wed Apr 13, 2022 6:40 pm

Hi,

Today I have been turned down by Allstate & Geico for liability insurance. According to my long time agent for Allstate, there is something about the MZ VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) that is not is compliance with NHTSA requirements.

I had the same problem when I tried to insure a Gas Gas Pampera 250 several years ago. The solution at the time was to take a picture of the VIN on the bike frame.

So far, I have gotten a quote from Dairyland and Progressive is supposed to give me a quote when their computers come back online.

I just had to ask my wife to make sure that she did not have any issues insuring my Sport Cup. She said no issues and put the same coverage as my other bikes (liability and comp) and we are insured with Geico.

She said she added it online with no problem when she did it.

I suspect the Geico refusal was due to internet service problems, more than anything to do with me or the MZ.

The Allstate refusal was due to their system not being able to accept the VIN.

I bought insurance today from progressive.

When I was in New Jersey I used Rider for years. Now that I moved to Virginia I have progressive.
There is one thing to note: the bike VIN number comes up that it's a tour not a traveller. I suspect back in 01 prior to purchasing it may have been imported as a tour then converted to a traveller. I was told by the shop I purchased it from in Philadelphia the bike was used in the motorcycle shows.
