You may not need the bleeder open if everything is working properly but it would help to open the master cylinder reservoir. As worn out as the other pads were, you have a lot of fluid in the caliper itself and will need vent the pressure that builds up in the reservoir as you try to push that fluid back into it when compressing the pistons back into their fully open position.
