Pro Taper handlebars installation

I installed Pro Taper CR low bend "woods" bars on my Black Panther.

The 2" narrower Woods bars are cool because it is really more comfortable for me (short arms) and vastly easier to filter between cars while lane sharing. The Woods bars are narrowed in the center section than regular MX bars, so the wide MZ clamps fall just barely into the bend part of the bar. This is fine but I wanted people to know about it.

You will also need a Pro Taper Universal Mounting Kit*. The 12mm D-bolts supplied with it did not fit the MZ. I had to buy black oxide 10x60mm allen head bolts at OSH. Stainless or cad plated bolts would be preferred but not so easy to find. You will have to slightly file or grind one side of each bolthead flat. I painted the bared metal with lacquer to hold off the rust awhile.

If you can get some 1mm thick tubing with a 10mm ID you can make good shims that will center up the bolts in the rubber bushings. I installed mine without shims but it took careful work to align them.

You'll have to drill a 1/8" x 1/8" hole in the LH bar to lock the switch housing in place. You should do this instead of filing down the lock nub since you do not want that housing rotating when you use the choke lever. Measure and mark the hole carefully, you want those switches to stay right where they can be easily reached while riding.

Pro Tapers not only look really swank but I love the narrower feel of the bars. Also seem to have cut down vibration thru the grips a teeny bit. Lastly, they weigh a bit less than the stock steel bars. Free HP!

* Universal = one size fits nothing.

Gedge

I will give you a clue on teh headlight - look at the front of your bike. As for teh speedo, I think the american market gets a different speedo than we do in the UK.

:-D :-D

err... my bike is a standard 2001 Black Panther... that's the stock speedo and headlamp cowl AFAIK. More recent Supermotos et al have the pentagonal white faced speedo. I like this one fine as it is narrow, I have room to fit a tacho next to it, perhaps.

Another difference I spotted between the 2001 bike and later newer bikes is the gas tank has a "launching ramp" on it between your balls and the gas cap. :-D

Both Gedge and my Baggi's have the later speedometer. Same as the Husky, so the husky revcounter can be fitted if you want.

well my bike is sitting at the local ducati shop awaiting some parts to add to the bike.

Heres the list :

A)M4 titanium slip-on pipe
B)Baja designs enduro LED taillight and plate holder
C)Acerbis SM front fender
D)Acerbis enduro handguards with built in turn signals
E)X-5 7/8" black cr-lo handlebars
F)CRG lane-split mirror
G)MZ crash bars
H)MZ fork covers
I)Sealed battery
J)Rubber covers for footpegs

1900 hrs, the parts A-F arrived at the shop this afternoon. Unfortunately the pipe sent was for a Sport so another pipe had to be ordered. The CR-LO bars were the same height as the stock so i asked them to order the CR-Hi bars for me.

That Baja Designs Taillight really cleans up the rear of the bike. I cant wait until it is ready to ride. Im also still waitin for the rectifier

I sit here in Upstate New York with 18" of fresh snow outside and my BP here next to me in the living room. A storage box full of parts and fabrication projects awaits me. I've been working on building a solar hot water heating system lately, but the BatBike is next!! I'll keep ya's posted with what will be one of the most unique looking BP's.

Well it is Sat. morning. The update on my bike : the rectifier arrived and was installed yesterday. All the fuses were checked and one was replaced. I ended up goin with Moose cr-hi 1 1/8" black flex bars on the bike. The bars and the universal clamps worked perfect. The baja design taillight cleans up the rear of the bike perfectly. I added some LED marker turn signals to the rear to complete the look. The M4 should arrive tuesday. I am waiting for the spacer kit for the Acerbis Enduro handguards with the built in turnsignals.

The Acerbis SM front fender looks great on the bike. It almost looks like it was made for the bp with the angles and all on the fender.

Tuesday should also see the arrival of the crash bars, fork covers etc. I will post pictures asap.

One other part i need is the piece that covers the radiator cap. Does anyone have one lying around from a project or wreck?

Matt-

It sounds great! Can you post some pics? How wide are those Moose bars? I used the Pro Tapers Woods bend bars because they are narrow (better for lanesplitting).

I am real interested now in seeing your LED turnsignal lights.

Pictures!!!!

Also, are you going to have any extra parts? Turn signals or black fenders? If so let me know.

rear license area including taillight, rear and front turn signals, front fender, stock bars, are all extra parts

I will post pics as soon as i can get some taken. I am definitely happy the way the parts fit the bike and changed the look. I received the parts I ordered from MZ yesterday and will post prices accordingly with the parts numbers.

Because of the taper of the bars spacers had to be used on the handguards which provides a PERFECT spot to mount the CRG lane split mirror.

I put black Universal Fat Bars in the YZ Yamaha bend....if you use the Pro-Taper adaptors for solid mount bars they sit right in the stock mount and raise the bars about an inch....way better....an M4 pipe.....fit right on....45 tooth rear sproket...opened up the airbox and rejetted carbs....I have a set of Battle Axe BT010's on it....I have an appointment to polish the swingarm, fork legs, and motor....just for the bling of it....motor and seat are next....
