Neutral light issues - Fixed

Postby iktank » Sat Apr 20, 2013 8:45 am

Hi - Help/advise would be appreciated
The neutral light on the dash does not go out, ie it is on all the time no matter what gear I am in. I have done the following

- Disconnectect the blue cable from the switch locatated just below front sprocket and just above the engine oil feed/drain pipe
- traced the blue cable to a bullet connector located to the rear of the petrol tank and disconnected it att this point just incase the cable was earthing as it traversed the slot by the the front sprocket.

The cable then dissapears into the loom and I was unsable to do anymore
Edit - Further messing
- In Neutral Side Stand Down, Blue cable disconnected - Neutral Light OFF
- In Neutral Side Stand Up , Blue cable disconnected - Neutral Light ON
- In Neutral Side Stand UP, Blue Cable earthed - Neutral Light ON
- In Gear Side Stand Down, Blue Cable connected - Neutral Light OFF
- In Gear Side Stand Up, Blue Cable connected - Neutral Light ON
- In Gear Side Stand Down, Blue Cable Earthed - Neutral Light ON
- In Gear Side Stand UP, Blue Cable Earthed - Neutral Light ON
- In Gear Side Stand Down, Blue Cable disconnected - Neutral Light OFF
- In Gear Side Stand Up, Blue Cable disconnected - Neutral light ON

Really confused, do I have a faulty switch that the blue cable sconnects to or is the side stand switch faulty -What can I do to repair neutral light operation?

Regards

Ian

Sounds an interesting challenge that I wanna fix as I love these synarios but its not on mine!! If you were local I'd have it fixed for you but I need to see it in the flesh. Where on the map are you? Eric

here is a drawing in this link of how it works
it has diodes in it that can cause even excellent electrics repair people problems
its a simple circuit but not seen all that often

Hi
Eric - Porthcawl, S Wales
David - ta for wire diagram, I have purchased a new neutral switch just wating for it to be delivered. If this does not fix it, it must be the diode.
Do you know where the diode is hidden and where I can get a replacement

not sure about in the uk
dave

some posts on here show them in the harness
but where there at in the harness may very
due to who put it together and when

Don't know how similar it is to the scorp but have a look at my thread "Skorpion Sport Back Current Barrier Diode" in the forum. Seems logical it will be in about the same location as the diagram looks very similar. If it's the same as mine, clean it up, resolder joints and it could well be ok.

Cheers both
I replaced the neutral switch to no avail, To summarise issue
- If side stand down the neutral light goes off when put into gear - so operates correctly
- if side satnd lifted and put into gear neutral light on.

I checked operation of side stand switch and its OK.
So I either ride the bike with the side stand switch disconnected or find this diode and repair o/replace.
I doubt it has corroded as the bike has no rust at all, always been garaged and has only done 2500miles

Cheers again

It can only be the diode at fault. Try a generic 3A rectifier diode like a 1N5400 (Maplins on UK high street or eBay) and connect it directly onto between the sidestand switch and the neutral switch (as shown on the diagram). If this has no effect the OEM diode has developed a short circuit. If it works the OEM diode has developed an open circuit.

djsbriscoe, if have ordered diode 1N5400 rectifier diode 3A 50v, can this be used to replace the OEM diode if found to be faulty - soz for dull question by I know very little about electrics.
You have confuced me a little tho with your last two sentence which to me contradict

I have now had the diodes delivered - purchased both
- 1N5400 rectifier diode 3A 50v (pack of 2)
- 6A, 50V Rectifier Diodes (pack of 4)

Going to open up the loom tomorrow morning and hopefully repair :?

Will it be obvious which way round the diode should be inserted?
Do I just cut out the original and solder in the new?

Sorry if questions appear dull - no good with electrics by OK mechanically.

Advise before I bitcher the loom would be appreciated,
Handsomejackuk you wlecome to call up to Porthcawl and laugh at me cocking things up :smt006

The OEM diode will have a band of colour at one end (if the diode is black, the band will be silver). This is denotes the CATHODE. The other terminal is the ANODE. Just remove the original diode and then connect/solder your replacement diode (which will be marked the same way) the same way around. If you can put some heat shrink tubing onto the loose wires BEFORE soldering them onto the diode (and then move the tubing over your completed soldered joint and then apply some heat from the soldering iron to shrink the tubing) it would make a neater job. This can be bought from maplins too. Not essential though as you could just wrap some insulation tape around everything.

Thank you all, replaced the doiode and neutral light now working as it should
I could nort beleave that it was also slightly corroded
Diode was exactly as per windmill previous posts. I extended the wireing so the diode can be replaced in the easier in the future if it goes again
Cheers

Which diode did you use in the end?Did you use heat shrink?

The 1N5400 rectifier diode 3A 50v and shrink wrapped the electrics, the ones from Tandy were very big and did not fit in the shrink wrap where the 1N5400 did.
Thanks again for your help
