Can you identify this Skorpion engine part?

Postby edfmaniac » Sat Jun 15, 2013 8:50 pm

Yes, it's embarrassing. I have a part left over and can't figure out where it belongs. It was in a container with the gears from the starter mechanism but I can't figure out if it belongs there or if it just got put in that container by mistake. Please help find the proper home for my lost part.

Parts 3 and 6 are the shafts on which the bearings ride. There's no room for an extra collar in there as far as I can tell and the diameter of the mystery piece doesn't match anything either. :?: Thanks for looking though.

whooo , i like guessing games,,,i think i allready know what it is , but lets play anyways,,

1/Are there tarnish marks on it like its gets hot now and then
2/are the fine rotary scratches on the inside or outside, like theres movement involved
3/what type of material is it ,quality engineered steel for inside gearbox or galvanised metals for outside engine
4/was it bone dry when you found it or oily
5/are there weather marks on it
6/is there a little wear mark on the edge of the item where something may tighten against it

is it ..

A rear engine mount collar the fits between the engines mounting hole for the mounting bolt to slip into, used as an anti seize item.

The part looks new and was slightly oily, but the oil could have been from the starter gears it was hanging out with for a few months. It's steel and was machined with middle of the road quality standards. No marks that would indicate any kind of wear that I can see.

It's definitely from somewhere on my Skorpion. There is a possibility that it isn't from the engine since I took the whole bike apart but I'm leaning towards it belonging on or in the engine. No other disassembled bikes in the garage.

I agree that it is a mounting collar. There are several in the engine.
there are 3 sizes.
Two of the larger between the two crankcase halves.
another 2 for the head
2 for the cam cover
2 each for the side covers
a small one for the starter gear cover.

incomplete list.
if I get a chance, I will drive the 10km to the machineshop and take photos or the dismantled motor.

OTOH
the collars do not have a lip.

I'm glad you chimed in Bill. It's definitely not an alignment pin/collar due to the lip or flange on the end. All of those were accounted for during assembly.

...you mean like this part?

I don't know where it goes, but I have a spare if you need it.

I was just in my shop and this one caught my eye in one of my parts bins. If I had to guess, I'd say this is some sort of insert used to keep a piece of plastic from collapsing when a bolt is tightened in to it - possibly the air box, or part of the lower fairing (which I have removed). Given the finish I doubt it is any sort of functional engine component. Whatever it is, my Skorp appears to run w/o it.
