Skorpian; Different speedo and tacho

Postby freeterri » Sun Jun 08, 2014 4:07 pm

Can anyone advise me what I can use to replace my clocks, on my Skorpian Sport, as they are both faulty, the rev counter has given up the ghost and the speedo just wavers about...apparently a common fault?

Duff tacho is endemic to the Skorpions. Fortunately, a tacho on a big single that revs as low as the 660 motor does is superfluous so can be ignored. No-one rides a Skorp looking at the tacho, I cover mine with route sheets when I'm touring, that's far more useful.

Wavering speedos aren't common though. Have you tried the simple things first and lubed the cable and drive?

I think you're right, I would remove inspect and lube or replace the cable - if the cable is OK then I would wonder about the drive in the wheel.

My rev counter was behaving like a metronome with the needle constantly swinging from side to side. After having it fully repaired the problem didn't go away so I took the bike in to the instrument repair shop. They found the steel plate the speedo and rev counter sit on was causing the rev counter plug to vibrate. I drilled a large clearance hole under the plug so the plug doesn't sit against the plate any more. Problem solved.

Very interesting cure...I wonder if all the Skorp tacho problems are related to this...may have to experiment..as mine does the usual shakey needle

the tach on my rt 125 was acting up for a while ..then the whole bike died

the plug where the charge system plugs into the voltage regulator had died
the ignition box was getting intermittent power

the plastic of the plug had just got old and hot and turned to white powder
i did away with the plug and connectors and just hard soldered it in and used heat shrink tube on the splice

all has been ok since ...but you will probably hear me CURSE the next time i have to take it all apart

I've spent ages trying, and quiet a lot of money, to get the tacho not being totally hysterical.
When I've put my hand on it I've felt that the whole dashboard has been vibrating a lot. So I removed the three bolts holding the dashboard to the steel-plate, put in some pieces of sponge and tied a string around it - and now I have a working tachometer!
Maybe I could find a way to replace the original rubber bussings that are more flexible and would allow a far better way protect the dashboard from the vibrations.
