MZ baghira "Hiccup" help

Postby roughridnsob » Sat Dec 06, 2014 7:31 pm

Just bought this bike earlier this week and everything seems to be alright except for this "hiccup" that it seems to have. the bike sat for awhile (~6 months) after being rebuilt due to previous owner breaking his back. Ive taken it on a 1 hour ride and seems to ride well but does have backfire/popping issues on hard decel. it does have an exhaust leak where the slip on connects to the primary's that I have not fixed yet.

Specs:
2000 MZ Baghira 660
slip on pipe from 2010 yzf450
recently rebuilt by yamaha (1200 miles)
stock carbs

Im pretty mechanically inclined but havent ever owned a MZ or anything with the yamaha 660 motor for that matter. any help is appriciated I have attached a video for your viewing and diagnosing pleasure.

welcome these are known for popping on deceleration
my traveller does it
someone will pop in with the common fix

my traveller was geared way to tall with a 39 rear sprocket i changed it to a 43 tooth
and got it more drivable

speed limits where i live are a bit low almost all local stuff 55 mph or less
lots of curves and wildlife

try draining the float bowl sounds like my rt125 when its got a bit of water in the float bowl
fuel to air adjustment may be a bit off and do not idle it real slow its a big single but not a slow running thumper
like an older big single..

That exhaust leak certainly wont help and will only add to any minor popping noise normally present on the overrun.

Not knowing your specific bike my guess would be a corroded secondary air inlet reed valve which permits more air (somewhere post exhaust valve) to increase gas temperature and burn off more pollutants inside the exhaust system prior to the exhaust gasses finally venting to atmosphere.
Yours may not be modern enough to have this set-up but if you have anything like this then either remove it or trace the secondary air inlet system back towards the air box and block this off with a very tight fitting marble or similar inside the rubber feed tube.

Baghiras don't have that system.

They all pop on the overrun to some extent, that exhaust leak won't be helping.

Sounds like a good strip and clean for the carbs wouldn't hurt....or at least run some sea foam with the gas or other carb additive...

The exhaust leak will certainly make problems worse, after fitting an aftermarket exhaust adjusted the mixture and replaced the air cut off valve

Gunson Colour Tune works well to set the mixture, they are a pain to fit but worth it
