Just for the record, I have replaced the poorley functioning MMB Tacho with:

SR500 Mechanical Tach
XT550 Cable (bit on the ling side but should be OK)
XT550 Gearbox

Bits cost abit under £50 quid on ebay, plastic instrument pod modified to suit SR unit which is about the same size as the MMB unit - and could still go back to an MMB unit if I wanted to.

Just thought this may help anyone else contemplating fitting a mechanical Tach in place of the MMB unit.

Some pics would be nice if you can manage it.
