Hi all! Quick wiring question

Postby molivo » Sun Feb 08, 2015 2:05 pm

Hello everyone. Just picked up a 2002 MZ 660. Had never even heard of one until I saw this one on craigslist. The previous owner had disconnected the wires going to the power distribution block next to the battery when he took the battery out to have it checked (without writing down what wire goes where :x ). When he hooked everything up, the headlight stays on until you unhook a wire going to the block. Can someone be so kind as to take a picture of their power block so I can see what wires go where?

Thanks!

What bike? There are quite a few MZ660's.

Can you read a schematic? There are resources for color coded wiring diagrams but we need to know which bike you have.

Thanks! I think i found the area on the schematic I need to be concerned with, but it does not appear to be color coded?

Hi,
This seems like a good time to ask about the colour abbreviations in the wiring diagrams. I couldn't work it out. Guessing they're German abbreviations.......? I gave up very quickly because my wiring was messed with in the past!

think all the brown wires are earth,3 or 4 of them, then the black goes to positive, double check on your bike though, good luck

first go here,,your wires should be in universal english, but if you still think its in german then go there,,the next one,,

1. <a href="http://www.allacronyms.com/wiring_color/topic">Wiring color</a>

2. http://translation.imtranslator.net/

If in Doubt,METER it out ..just have confidence in yourself , unless your colour blind, its not that hard,if your still worried , lower the rating of the fuse in that circuit so it blows easier if its wrong,

Thanks guys. I'll have another look. Really doesn't help though that the wiring has really been messed with in the past. It's a working mess though!

It's a working mess though!

in my experience they come new from the factory in the "MESS" and get worse from there
my rt125 has stopped more times from electrical problems than anything else

I'd agree completely with Dave here .................... these East German bikes left the factory with poor quality wiring. The copper's dreadful and the connections aren't much better. The bikes really deserve better.

If you're serious about owning an MZ (if only for the cachet of owning that unusual badge) then the biggest favour you can do yourself and your bike is to ditch the soviet wiring and replace it with a Western substitute. Greater reliability, less problems with flexion-cracking at the steering head and the knowledge that only comes with rebuilding something right down at component level. There's also the satisfaction of a weekend well-spent!!!

I did mine using the wiring harness from an Audi and have never had an electrical problem since. The number of problems-in-waiting I uncovered in the process was positively unnerving..........................!

i am making plans to put the traveller or saxon tour back on the road this summer
the traveller needs some tlc plus carb work its electrical is a bit tired but thankfully has not been butchard
the saxon looks as if new
so we hope we can make something work
because the rt125 does need tidied up a bit after 12 years
