Mastiff hesitant runing

Postby ericetz301 » Mon Aug 10, 2015 2:59 am

hi folks collective wisdom please.
I have a 2001 Mastiff 42 K miles, that has started running oddly, not quite miss firing but running hesitantly, easy starting and smooth tick over, I've changed the plug NGK DPR 8 BE-9, but, still the same symptoms.
any suggestions on a cure would be appreciated.
cheers Eric.

Check the choke plunger is not jamming.

Theres other posts on here with more detail, but basically

unscrew the choke cable end from the carb.
At the end of the cable is a spring and the plunger
Clean out the orifice
Clean the plunger
lube with a tiny smidgen of silicon grease

replace and check that the idle speed changes as you move the choke through its three positions (fully off, one click on?, fully on)

Other than that its fuel air and spark.

Any blows on the exhaust

any leaks in the airbox>carb>engine rubbers.

Is the air filter fully covering the air intake (check at the bottom with gloved fingers)

Any loose wiring?

Do the easy stuff first-drain the float bowl.

Quite right, the drain screws are made of cheese btw.

While your doing it you could connect a bit of clear hose up to the float bowl drain an check the fuel level in the bowl, by holding the end of the hose up.

Might indicate your floats set too high and running rich.

hi folks,
Many thanks for all the suggestions to cure the problem, I`ve now replaced the ignition coil C/W HT cable, treated the bike to a new Iridium plug, washed the air filter & re oiled it and finally cleaned and lubed the starter plunger assy.
The bike runs a treat now :D its`a shame we`re heading for the winter :|
cheers Eric.
