K&N air filters

collective wisdom please.
is there any benefit in changing the standard foam air filter for K&N type air filters?
and if there is, part numbers would be appreciated.

dirt is an enemy make something out of the foam the trail bike riders use

some of the fancy brand name stuff lets in too much DIRT

Ditto...cut out the guts on the stock filter and insert 2 layers of UNI filter foam, cut to fit tight. Topped it off with some wire mesh. Wash and oil with oil changes.

bill says it and thats what i do to the mz bikes

we build big filters for a friends plowing and mowing tractors boy do we use a lot of uni foam

Using the stock filter frame and UniFoam filter material:
Pieces/parts. Cut the foam just a bit larger than the frame. I sourced the wire mesh cover from a letter tray at the Good Will store...$1 and enough material for 3 screens.
I bought some Unifoam Green foam from the local MC shop. Cut to fit. 2 layers. I made 2 sets. Wash with soap and water every oil change. Set that one aside to dry and load up the last one with oil and install. (bit dirty here, it's almost time for a cleaning and we just moved homes, so my extras are in a box somewhere... :oops: )

I used some small sheet metal screws (left overs from an RC model) to hold the wire screen on:

No issues as far as I can tell. Other than I can service the filter :D You can't find the stock item in the USA for any price (as much as I've tried.)

finding dealers that ship to USA is getting hard and the shipping breaks the pocket book..when they do ship

Yep, been there, almost done that....with shipping, would have been around $50 US for one filter back when I checked for European sources (a while ago).

That's when I looked at the DIY conversions and came up with the idea to use the foam.

i can give a tip :smt006 :smt006 . i use the KTM390 k&n filter. it fit perfect in the muz airbox.

Where were you when I was measuring all those K&Ns down at the car parts store... :D :lol:

put a sheet of fabric from a used pair of pantie hose over the main inlet to get all the fine stuff

before it gets there cause that k and n does not stop the fine stuff we get here
on the back country roads from the water trucks tracking it on the main highways

friend of mine runs an r60 as a daily driver i made him drop the oil pan at 2000 miles on his oil change
he went back to filters for bmw mc
