50:1 or 33:1

Seems to be some differing opinions regarding petrol / oil mix for the TS 250.

Seems that some swear by 33:1, others by the recommended 50:1 which is what I was planning to use.

In the last 40 years since the bike was made I am sure that oil technology has improved and a modern semi synth (which is what I used to use in my ETZ) will be just fine at 50:1

Any thoughts?

Yep - factory recommendation for the TS250/1 is 50:1 and I plan to use the same oil as I use iin my Kawasaki Triple, and as I think I said used to use in the ETZ.

Quite tempting to follow you and go for 40:1 just for peace of mind.

As you say modern Semi - Synth oils are pretty much smokless these days.

MZ recommended 1: 50 for the TS and ETZ Models.
So nowadays with the better 2-stroke oils than in the GDR 1:40 is far to much oil...
And as always: More is not always better :-)

Here in Germany many MZ drivers have rations with about 1:60 or 1:70 without any problems.

MZ allowed 1:100 using full synthetic oil (castrol biolube then)for the ETZ 250/251 .

Too much oil makes it run weaker in terms of fuel/air, i thought someone of your vast knowledge would know that!

Guesi - I was thinking along those lines in that modern semi synth oils are way better that the oils of 40 years ago when these bikes were built.

I was thinking that perhaps going to 40:1 might give a little more protection, but if the ETZs are running at 50:1 that is what I'll stick with as I used to run my old ETZ pretty hard with no problems.

Thanks

Although that is true, I've now put 14k on one bike, and 18k on another and not re-jetted. I did the calculations at the time for 30:1 and the margin is so small it just doesn't matter.
Infact, the jets for the pre-mix vs injection etz 250's are the same. I know at a recommended 50:1 it's more in line with the pump, but alas the pump is directed straight into the barrel. In the official service manual, no distinction is made between the two.
