Hi Puffs. I'm amazed you can get a pipe down the dip stick tube and then get it to reach the very bottom of the sump as most dipstick holes have a very small dipper diameter. Perhaps modern car engines have a dedicated orifice for doing it this way? As regards sucking the air from a container (old beer cask? ) ...................I would use a vacuum cleaner

they caught a fellow here using a vacuum cleaner to siphon gasoline from a tractor

the vacuum cleaner had brushes on the motor it spread it parts all over the yard when it blew up

bet he took that off his list of how to do things

Hi David. There's a big difference between sucking up gasoline and sucking air which is what Puffs wants to do.

Just a little horror story I can remember from my childhood. My father who was not particularly mechanically minded decided to change the oil in an old Austin car that he owned. He had bowl under the sump hole and waited for it to stop dripping. He then thought he would make certain all the oil was removed by starting the engine and revving it for about 30 seconds. Well he got about half a cup more oil drain out but obviously the big end and main bearings must have been ruined...

On older French engines (Peugeot, Renault, Citroen) you often saw written 'Le rinsage du moteur est interdit' = 'It is forbidden to flush the engine'. There must have been a tribe that wanted to wash out that last bit of dirty oil, with petrol for instance.
