I'm back...

Postby Andy_C » Fri May 21, 2021 10:48 am

After a while without an MZ I have bought another one - just couldn't resist.

This time not an ETZ but a 1981 TS250 5 speed.

Currrently "up on the bench" while I give a good going over, more or less standard except for handlebars.

Looking forward to getting it on the road - must admit I prefer this style to the ETZ.

Good times ahead hopefully :-D

Ah, the 'Super 5' (or is it Supa 5?), good on you! And a good time to buy a bike, hopefully it'll soon be summer. Some pics maybe?

I suppose it's still your 4th bike, so you're not really without. Or 5th maybe - did it ever work out with the Himalayan?

Puffs - well remembered with the Himalayan, yes that has turned out very nicely thanks.

Bought a new one and done nearly 5000 miles on it, does everything I wanted it to.

This is my 4th bike at the moment, currently have the TS, the Himalayan, my old H2 Triple and now a Triumph 865 Speedmaster so that me and the other half can go out and about on it, she had not been out on a bike since our Daughter was born, she is now 19 so my other half decided it was time to get back on the back of a bike.

Back to the TS, I have the front wheel out at the moment and I noticed that the bearings appeared to be very very stiff, once I removed the bearings both were fine - they spin perfectly OK but once you put them back and seat them in position they are very stiff. All I can put it down to is the length of the spacer - possibly a little too long so it is pushiing on the inner races, no idea of knowing if it the correct spacer or not, any idea how long the spacer should be, or any thoughts as to what is causing the problem.

Couple of pictures of the TS.....

Puffs - the handlebars are non-standard, I'll be fitting some "proper" high bars to the bike.

Thanks for the note about Miraculis.de I managed (with help from google translate) to find the spacer, however it does not specify the length.

I am going to investigate further to see if I can find the cause of the problem, but it does look like a spacer issue as I cant see any wear in the bearing housings.

Nice job sorting a bike for your other half.

Quick update - found the size on: https://www.ost2rad.com/MZ-Spare-Parts/ ... Z-250.html

Fair comment - here is what I did.

I removed the spacer again, running a vernier over the length I found that it varied slightly - you could see and feel that one end had been damaged.

I put it in my lathe and very carefully turned off the end until the high spot was gone - probably in the order of 0.1mm or less.

Refitted the spacer and bearings, bearings ran freeley and there is no axial movemment on the sleeve that I could feel.

I am pretty confident that it was just the small local high spot that was causing the problem.

I have always liked the TS, personally I think they are the best looking model, this one came up at a sensible price so I thought why not, I have regretted selling the previous 2 MZ's that I have had - the 301 and the ETZ 250 so hopefully this one will stay for a long while.

Dosent need that much doing to it, probably about £200 on top of what I bought it for plus my time.

Hopefully have it on the road next month once I have finished fettling it.

I have now reached my 4 bike limit - I also have to look after 3 cars, my Daughters,Other halfs and mine.

I do think the ETZ250 has a certain style, it is interesting because it's a lot different than the TS. Almost like it's at least trying to keep up with fashionable design changes (things getting more angled as you go into the 80s- not just square, but angled in their squareness too, if you see what I mean).

Anyway- three cars too huh?
At least your three cars belong to different people and get used seperately I suppose...

My three cars are only driven by me..
