Starting issue

Good morning everyone.
I am new to the forum and the sf1000.
Have you experienced starting issue, it struggles to crank over like there is a compression or hydraulic lock. Often on first or first second push of the start switch, then presto cranks and starts, runs like a charm.
I removed the altenator cover and found nothing damaged, turns easy enough with a wrench.
New spark plugs, battery. Disasembled the starter and cleaned the coils, start relay works normal.
My next guess would be for valve clearance and cam timing but that is a time consuming job.
I work on aircrafts that are less technical that this motorcycle, shame they went burst.
Thanks for any advice you may have, bike is in Iceland, only one around and no support available.

if it does not have very many miles on it it may be hard to start for a while

my rt125 was a bit tight till it had about 4000 miles on it
the friction of 4 new cylinders can be a problem till it gets loose
also use the gas that's hi test with no ethanol
and see if it starts better
and a very big battery
i have never met a bike that had a big enough battery

Hi thanks for the advice.
It is strange, i checked the starter, looked and turned normally yet its a good idea to replace the brushes to be sure.
The engine turns light enough with sparkplugs removed.
Engine has 10000 miles on it.
I will try again with extra strong battery and see if it makes any difference
Also like to try to read the computer codes, can i use normal OBD2 reader? Found on amazon for good price, listed good for cars of later models.

Hi , Im having same problem with starting , never have time to investigate the problem since i have other bikes that im riding , please report what you have find when you are done . 6 k miles on my MZ . Thanks .

Hi All
I delt with this issue over 10 years ago, tried bigger batteries heavier cables, not much help, had the rotor side cover off and noticed a friction drive on one of the starter gears, tightened the nut a little, that fixed it.

similar slip unit in the 125 motor it is to protect the sprag unit if you let the clutch out while
going backwards with motor stopped or it the motor runs backwards

too loose motor does not start too tight and sprage clutch blows if the bike trys to run at all backwards
its a 2 way slip unit

never put bike in gear on a hill and use the clutch to drift backwards on the bike
its over 200usd to fix it on an rt125

Check out the step wheel or the mass flow to the frame.

But I´m not the expert for this subject.I remember, there had been others with the same problem.

if you have a bad noise wenn the starting issue is activ,
the step weel (parts manual page 108 M09 crank shaft No 1) has a fricon cluch,
diasamble the step wheel, mark the big nut, lose the big nut and clean the tread,
use Loctite tigth the nut 1/12 -1/6 more

Hi , yes its a steeper wheel , just open up the cover yestarday and confirmed the problem . However my nut on that wheel is not loose at all , but i can see that wheel dsnt turn when i crank the motor . Just needs to be tighter . Thank you for information .( i have put it wrong . The wheel is turning , but is slipping and dsnt turn the engine . And makes that noise lol )

its a 2 way slip to protect things from mass destruction
the rt125 has one and it not adjusted correct destroyed a bunch of freewheels in 2002 and 2003

Ok , problem fixed ! I have fix the steeper wheel problem , it took 1/8 of a turn to make it work . I was turning the nut little by little and pressing the starter untill it kick in , so tight it very little at the time until it works better to tight it again than over tight it and blow something . And if it gets to trowing codes , when the wheel did not work right i was getting fuel pump codes and every time i have erase them they come back ,now i have start the bike couple of times today , and codes are gone , so i think if the bike cant start and the battery gets week , the ECU is confused and throws the codes , so fix the steeper wheel first before you get to worry about the codes .
