New to me 1995. MZ Country 500

Postby Little General » Thu Dec 10, 2020 11:18 am

Sunday I will pick up a MZ 500 Country I bought. It has been sitting since 2015 in a building with about 50 Can AMS. Thr bike looks complete and has compression when kick start is pressed. I will post picks. The owner used to own a Can Am dealership and collects any Rotax engine he can. He needed to thin the herd. He claims all it needs is full service, tires etc. I found a service manual online in German but one in English would be great if anyone has access to one. I’m sure I will be picking you guys brains on this project. I’m located in NC in USA.

The rarest of all the Rotax engined MZs i would say.
The engines are easy to work on (I had a Saxon 500R) but if its been sitting a long time make sure you fit a new cam belt, again a very easy job to do.

Is the a typical belt that can be bought at auto parts store or specialized ? Where can I get one?

Does the bike need a battery to start with the kick starter? I read the military MT500 has a separate electrical system for the lights and battery.

the kick starter is a good way to break your leg
use the compression release spin motor up and release

when shutting off use compression release then turn off key

so motor does not run backwards against starter sprage

mt 500 cam mt500 cam for better kicking

army bikes need to start so you can make an escape(see force motorcycles uk ?)

I got a new timing belt in the deal and when I changed it out, the old belt was at least one if not two cogs off when lining up the timing marks through the bolt centers. I don’t have a proper spark plug wrench so I can’t pull the plug today. I am picking up a new battery today. The tank was drained and so was the carb. I dropped the bowl and it was extremely clean. The old belt was loose and maybe it jumped a cog and started running bad and the guy sold it. I usually buy someone else’s headaches. Maybe I get lucky this time. Where can I find a tool kit and service manuals?

Today I got the pain in the ass oil change done yesterday and finally got to ride the bike today. It doesn't have a bunch of pep but accelerates like an electric motor. Just seems to wind out. After sitting for at least 5 years and hasn't been tagged since 2006, it runs pretty good. It start and idles just fine , I put in a new battery, changed the oil , air filter , lubed the cables, greased the chain which looked new as well as the front sprocket, checked the ground wires, loose, and filled it up with non ethanol gas. This bike rides as well as or better than my BMW gs. the low cog make u turns a breeze. I guess I need to change the tires , they look new but are at least 10 years old. I was thinking about these tires , https://www.chapmoto.com/bridgestone-ba ... 330-011458 , hoping they won't rub the chain protector. Here are a few pics of the bike. Later this winter , I plan to install new tires and clean up the hubs and rims and remove the exhaust and paint it too.
