New TS250 Owner

Hi all,
I bought a 1974 MZ TS250 last week, and I'm looking forward to getting it running and taking it for a ride. It was donated to a museum a few years ago so was decommissioned (fuel drained, battery not charged), so I'll need to do a little bit probably, but not much.

That looks like a nice bike, but for once I'm not in complete agreement with BM; to my mind it does not quite look like a museum piece. But still - nice!

Yes so it seems Dave. In that year they must have had a very active export/import line to the US. Or some special rule, law, monetary?

I just bought what seems to be a 1974 TS 250 from an old gentleman in Arkansas who said it had sat in a warehouse for 20 years. Shows 5 miles on the clock and is a little rough around the edges but I couldn't resist. Now what the hell am I gonna do with it?

5 miles on the clock? 20 years in a warehouse? Don't trust the numbers, but look at the bike. If it's really only done 5 miles, it should have the original Pneumant DDR tyres, not worn at all, clean oil in the gearbox, brakes new, etc. Doesn't matter, you buy the bike in the condition it is in.

Enjoy riding it! Do not forget: it is a two stroke, it needs oil in the fuel, premixed. See manuals on Blurredman's website, or miraculis.de (in native German).

Good to see another MZ on the go and I hope it all goes well for you, but I have to agree with Puffs, it's not what I would expect
for a museum piece with only 5 miles on the clock ie, I'm not sure about the type of indicators, the exhaust gas leaking where joining
the silencer and the trouser/pant wear on the front of the battery box. It all doesn't look quite right for the 5 miles bit.
Having said that, you have the makings of a great bike. Something which I feel I must mention, I have a 1977 TS 250/1 that was sitting
in the corner of my garage for about 20 years or so, and the original main seals hardened and shrunk resulting in lots and lots of smoke.

It does look like a very nice bike Michael. Only the exhaust header seems a bit stained, but otherwise, indeed, a new museum piece, congrats! Hope you'll enjoy it more than Alan M.

And the Pneumant DDR tyres will confirm a low mileage - don't think you can buy those in the US.

That is a very nice bike. It always makes me feel split though in regards to the chrome items they put on the US bikes (presumably to invite US buyers).

I did a lot of searching on this forum to ensure I was asking a redundant question. I noticed the voltage regulator on my 1974 TS250 was a little loose in its mounting bracket.... discovered the foam / rubber spacer behind the voltage regulator had perished and was almost dust. Did the foam / rubber spacer prevent the voltage regulator from contacting metal / hence grounding out....or was the spacer's function just to stabilize the voltage regulator?

Its just for anti vibration. Not electrical.

That looks again surprisingly good! But yes, foam or other plastics won't last almost 50 years.

I too suspect the intention was to dampen vibrations. I have mine (ETZ, similar) suspended in 'O'-rings (big ones you get when you replace your car's oil filter).

OK...many thanks...I'll ensure the voltage regulator doesn't touch metal when I put it back in.
